A Look at the New UAE Traffic Laws for 2025: Prison Time and Fines

UAE Traffic Laws for 2025

In 2025, the UAE made big changes to their traffic laws in all Emirates, including Dubai. These changes were meant to make the roads safer, reduce accidents, and hold both drivers and pedestrians responsible.

This article makes the new rules clear, which helps readers understand the new punishments and what they should not do.

When Did the New Rules Go Into Effect?

On March 29, 2025, Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024 went into effect in all of the UAE. It made the penalties for traffic violations stricter than they had been before.

Age to Drive Lowered to 17

One big change is the new minimum driving age. Teens can now get their license at 17 if they pass all the tests and medical exams they need to. This gives young drivers more chances, but it also makes them more responsible.

Jaywalking is Now a Serious Crime

When walking on public streets, pedestrians must use the marked crosswalks and follow traffic signals. If they don’t, they could face penalties like:

  • Start out with a fine of AED 5,000 for each unit.
  • If you get into an accident while jaywalking, you could be fined up to AED 10,000.
  • A pedestrian who crosses a road with a speed limit of 80 km/h could go to jail for at least three months and pay a fine of AED 10,000.

Tougher Rules for Driving While Drunk

Offenses Involving Alcohol:

  • First Offense: Your license will be suspended for 23 days and you will have to pay a fine of AED 20,000.
  • Second Offense: At least three months in jail and a fine of AED 30,000. Your license may also be canceled.

Crimes Involving Drugs:

  • Depending on the type and severity of the crime, fines can range from AED 30,000 to AED 200,000.
  • Some cases that are more serious could end up with jail time.

What Happens if You Leave the Scene of an Accident

If you’re in an accident, you have to stop, help, and report it right away. If you don’t, you could face serious penalties. Not doing so could mean:

  • Fines between AED 50,000 and AED 100,000
  • Up to two years in jail

These punishments apply no matter what happens, even if people are hurt or property is damaged in an accident.

Driving Without a Valid License

It is now a serious crime to carry or use a license that is not working or to have your license suspended or canceled.

  • The fine is between AED 10,000 and AED 50,000
  • Jail sentences of up to three months
  • It is also against the law to drive without a valid license, and you can be punished for it.

People Who Are Responsible for Causing Death by Driving Carelessly

People who drive and cause accidents that kill people may face punishment:

  • He will have to pay at least AED 50,000 and spend at least one year in prison
  • If the death happens while breaking other laws (e.g., DUI, running a red light, entering flood zones), the fine goes up to AED 100,000

Changing or Damaging License Plates

Changing or damaging license plates is against the law, and you should never try to do it.

  • Fines start at AED 20,000
  • Jail time may also be possible

Always keep license plates clean, unaltered, and easy to see.

Electric Bikes and Scooters

These new rules apply to people who own or ride electric scooters or e-bikes:

  • You must be at least 16 years old and wear a helmet and reflective clothing
  • The speed limit is 20 km/h
  • Only use lanes or pathways that are allowed

Fines for breaking the rules range from AED 300 to AED 1,000.
If you keep breaking the rules, you could lose your scooter or even be banned from riding it.

Vehicle Inspection and Emissions

For the sake of road safety and the environment, the standards for vehicle inspections have become stricter.

  • Cars more than five years old must be checked every year
  • Commercial vehicles must be checked every six months
  • Emissions must meet Euro 6 standards

If you don’t pass inspection:

  • Fine of AED 2,000
  • Six black points
  • Car may be taken away

Eminescu: Driving Without Cover

In the UAE, all cars must have insurance, and it must meet minimum regulatory standards.

  • If you drive without it, you could get a fine of AED 500
  • You can get black points
  • Your car will get a black mark until you can show proof of insurance to the police

Drivers with clean records renewing their insurance policies could get discounts of up to 30%.

Smart Cameras and AI for Law Enforcement

The UAE now uses smart cameras and advanced AI technology to find violations like:

  • Speeding
  • Running red lights
  • Not wearing a seat belt
  • Using a phone while driving
  • Illegal tinted windows

These systems can automatically detect and fine such behaviors.

Conclusion

One of the biggest changes to road safety laws in history is the UAE’s 2025 traffic law overhaul.

The goal of these new laws is to save lives, stop people from acting recklessly, and create a culture of responsibility. For example, drunk driving laws are stricter and AI monitoring is more advanced.

Now more than ever, we need to focus on smarter enforcement and safer roads.

It’s very important to know and follow traffic rules, whether you’re driving, riding, walking, biking, or not!

Following the rules not only keeps you safe, but it can also keep you hook from getting in trouble with the law.
